With the launch of the Startup India Initiative on 16 January 2016, the Government of India gave a clear signal that it recognised Entrepreneurship as a vocation worthy of support. The young people who chose to build deserved the same Institutional attention as those who chose to study or those who chose to serve. <\/span>We at ICC think that India needs more job creators than it needs job seekers<\/span>. Today in 2026, India has more than 2.26 lakh DPIIT (Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade) recognised Startups spanning 56 industry sectors and over 700 districts. More than 19,400 patent applications have been filed by Startups, signalling a deeper engagement with research-led innovation. Nearly 48% of all DPIIT-recognised startups, more than 1.10 lakh enterprises, have at least one woman director or partner. India now stands as the third-largest startup ecosystem in the world.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

A)<\/span> What made<\/span> this possible?<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The talent and the ambition were always there. What changed was the infrastructure that enabled them to act. India now has over 1000 incubators and accelerators, 1735 SEBI-recognised Alternate Investment Funds, and an Atal Tinkering Lab network of more than 10,000 labs across 733 districts, engaging over 1.1 crore students. The Fund of Funds for Startups has committed over Rs 7000 crore to more than 135 Alternate Investment Funds, which have collectively invested over Rs 26,900 crore across more than 1420 Startups. Fund of Funds 2.0, with a fresh Rs 10,000 crore corpus, now specifically targets Deep Tech, Manufacturing and Startups from Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities. The Startup India Seed Fund Scheme has approved over Rs 592 crore to early starge Startups through incubators. Over the past decade (2016\u20132026), Indian Startups have attracted over $150 billion in cumulative private investments and venture capital, and we have over 120 unicorns to date.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

But for a first-generation founder in a district down, knowing that DPIIT registration is free, that tax benefits are available, and that seed funding is accessible changes everything. It transforms a dream into a publicly supported reality. But knowledge needs a medium to travel. The TEJAS (Transforming Entrepreneurial Journeys Across States & Districts) Initiative, Startup India\u2019s district-level sensitisation programme, operates across more than 130 districts in approximately 27 States and Union Territories, and conducts workshops, orientation sessions and outreach programmes that spread this knowledge. Chambers of Commerce, like ours, have considerably spread the knowledge and helped Startups to grow by connecting them to Funders and Large Corporates who would either increase their order books or take an equity stake in them or both.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

B)<\/span> Are there any challenges in this Growth Story?<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Unfortunately, there are, but there are Solutions to these Challenges too.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
\u00b7 <\/span>Realisation to move from Funding to building a Sustainable Business- <\/span>Long before 2000, a senior Kolkata-based entrepreneur had advised a Startup- \u201cMake sure that the cash inflow is higher than the cash outflow from day 1. ROI can be improved later\u201d. If all Startups imbibed this in heart and soul, then the success rate of Indian Startups would exceed the global benchmark of 40%<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
\u00b7 <\/span>Scaling up Funds are scarce- <\/span>India has relatively good mechanisms for ideation, incubation and seed funding. The bigger gap appears when a Startup needs substantial capital to move from Proof-of-Concept \u2192<\/span> Commercialisation \u2192 National\/Global scale. This is particularly severe in Deep Tech, where conventional VC timelines do not match the relatively longer gestation period before profitability.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
\u00b7 <\/span>We need more Easing of Rules for <\/span>startups,<\/span> who often go through multiple layers of compliance as an MSME or a Large Corporate<\/span>.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
\u00b7 <\/span>A portion of Government Procurement could be earmarked for Startups only<\/span>,<\/span> and this would give a great boost to Aggregate Demand<\/span>.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
\n
To conclude, Gen Z can build, and we know it can. But whether it chooses to build and has the necessary tools at the right moment to build.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
