Never underestimate the power of the common man; we had heard this dialogue in many places. But today, we share a story of how the common man became a source of power to a charitable institution. That institution and its Chief Monk had huge followers. Nowadays, we are all affected by stress and hearing the Monk’s discourse on discipline and restraint every day was a powerful antidepressant for us to begin the day and fight our battle. The Monk was having difficulty in raising funds through CSR to help the poor in the villages he looked after, often they were affected by climate disasters, which not only affected their livelihood, usually agriculture, but also their accommodation. Constraints are many constraints for a daily earner, which someone in touch with them would only realise. Suddenly, the Monk had an idea and posted his problem on social media and asked people to help, to the best of their ability. Money started pouring in from his followers, from thousands to lakhs, and soon he exceeded his target collection, and he happily started giving clothes, medicines, books, food and all the support possible and happily spread it on Social Media. Today, this Social Support through crowdfunding has spread like anything. There are Indian crowdfunding sites which offer a streamlined and transparent platform for donors to send their contributions directly to the frontline NGOs involved in relief efforts. Poor people with children affected by critical diseases like cancer or requiring lifesaving organ transplantation, etc., often appeal directly through Social Media. Compassionate donors can choose to support specific initiatives or causes to make sure that their donations meet the needs on the ground. By the way, 60% of companies exceed their CSR targets of 2%. For the balance 40%, we need not worry, it is the ordinary Indian who would fund.
