India is projected to be the largest Rice producer in the world at the end of 31st March 2025 and data authentication to the effect is going on. West Bengal is among the top most rice-producing States in India, typically producing around 15 million metric tons of rice annually, majorly contributing to India’s rice exports. The State has precious wealth of genetic diversity in aromatic rice- Gobindabhog, Tulaipanji, Kalonunia, Radhunipagal, Kataribhog, Badshabhog, Radhatilak, etc. are very popular in domestic markets also because of their quality.
Rice cultivation faces climate change, water scarcity, soil fertility decline, fertilizer use, pest control, stubble burning, and environmental degradation, impacting biodiversity and ecosystems. Several technologies in this regard are being adopted in the sector which includes aerobic rice, alternate wetting and drying (AWD), climate-resilient varieties, and precision farming techniques through drones and smart irrigation. To listen to more detailed technology updates in rice sphere, join us at the Bengal Rice Conclave happening on 25h July 2025, The Park Hotel, Kolkata.
Government of India is giving support through policy initiatives like Minimum Support Price (MSP), Procurement schemes, and policies aimed at increasing production and promoting food security and ensuring fair prices to the farmers while giving affordable food to the consumers. Other supports include lifting the export ban on broken rice and promoting indigenous aromatic rice varieties, a reflection of which would be our being on the way to become the global Rice Leader. To hear the latest in Rice Support Policy please come to the meet on 25th July, 2025 at the Park Hotel, Kolkata.
The Government of West Bengal has also introduced initiatives, including climate-resilient seeds, crop insurance and direct-seeded rice (DSR). Research has been laid on stress-tolerant, hybrid and bio-fortified rice varieties as well. Efforts to promote indigenous aromatic varieties have expanded cultivation significantly. Additionally, research is focusing on the development of diabetic-friendly and nutrientrich rice varieties to enhance cultural dishes and health security. The upcoming Bengal Rice Conclave on 25th July will be enlightened with several speakers from the State Government to explain how the Government is supporting Rice Cultivation.
